Micro-Tools for Freelancers: Worth Building?
Verdict: build it as a weekend project to learn a distribution channel, not as a standalone business.
The idea
A single-purpose tool for freelancers — a rate calculator, a contract generator, an invoice-late-fee calculator, that category of thing. Low build cost, clear search intent, decent existing demand.
The case for
Search volume is real and mostly informational-to-transactional, which is a good mix. Build cost is a weekend, not a quarter. It’s a legitimate way to test SEO distribution without much capital at risk, and a genuinely useful tool earns natural links from resource pages.
The case against
The category is crowded with well-funded competitors — think the big invoicing and payments platforms — who build the same tool as a loss-leading acquisition funnel for their actual product. You’re not competing with another indie site here. You’re competing with a company that doesn’t need the tool to make money on its own.
The verdict, stated plainly
Build it if the goal is a portfolio piece or a lead-gen funnel into something else you already sell. Don’t build it as a standalone revenue play — the ceiling is too low and the competitive set is too well capitalized. Weekend project, not a business.
